It’s difficult to know where cross stitching originally began. Perhaps Egypt or China. Many sources conflict, so it’s most likely we’ll never know. But one thing we can say for sure is that it’s as old as the hills. It’s a craft where threads are stitched in the shape of an X that create a unique pattern. In comparison, quilting involves multiple pieces of fabric with at least three layers. The inner includes an insulating layer to stay warm. They often included an artistic pattern as well. You can see this in the episode A Closer Walk. Artistic quilt patterns were often displayed on barns here in East Tennessee but it is quickly becoming a lost art. I still keep warm with homemade quilts that have lasted for decades.
Cross stitching allows for much more detail for a pattern or image. It’s often very time consuming and can cause eye strain. So if you don’t have the patience you’ll find it to be a struggle. Some though find it to be relaxing and a way to show off your craft. Here’s a Christy cross stitch done by my mother. It’s design was from the DVD cover art. The amount of stitches for this 16”x20” took an astounding 35,700 stitches to complete.
