Mortgage

Ken Wales, a producer of Christy wanted to bring the novel to your screen. He was constrained since MGM owned the rights. He finally succeeded in getting the rights by mortgaging his house and emptying his life savings. A process and dream that took 19 years.

Singer-songwriter Judy Collins makes several guest appearances.

Quarter Million

The amount MGM used to buy the filming rights to the ‘Christy’ novel… and never use it. $250,000.

Called

The named ‘Christy’ is latin for ‘follower of Christ’.

$1,200,000

It took around 1.2 million dollars to produce each episode. Primarily because of it’s on location filming.

Frontiersman

Christy producer Barney Rosenzweig was also a producer on the 1960’s series Daniel Boone, starring Fess Parker.

Studio sets

No stages were used for the series. Every structure was built on site.

Yeehaw

John Schneider known as Bo in the hit series ‘The Dukes of Hazzard’ guest starred in the episode ‘Amazing Grace’.

Governor

Don Sundquist, governor of Tennessee asked all Tennesseans to support the series. At the time it was one of his favorite TV shows.

Award

Tyne Daly (Alice Henderson) won the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for ‘Christy’ in 1996.

Mourning Dove

The bird call at the beginning of the theme song is a Mourning Dove. The call was left out of 5 episodes including A Closer Walk, Judgment Day, Babe in the Woods, The Road Home, and of course the Pilot.

Writer

Kellie Martin was a writer for the season 2 episode ‘Babe in the Woods’.

35mm

Christy was shot on location and the cameras used 35 millimeter film in a cinematic process like movies. It’s possible that film restoration could provide a widescreen HD format.

Connections

The 1980s police detective series ‘Cagney and Lacey’ were both produced by Barney Rosenzweig / the Rosenzweig Company. Tyne Daly (Miss Alice) starred in both series.

Location

Although the series is set in The Great Smokies, the filming area (Townsend, TN) is set just outside of the park. The real life location (Del Rio, TN) is in the Cherokee National Forest around 15 miles north of the Smokies. All of the areas are a subset within the Blue Ridge Mountains.
