I’ll list the top 5 most memorable moments of the Pilot episode. There certainly were a lot of them, so I’ll boil it down as best I can.

5. The Fire

Christy’s preparation of school work is thwarted by locals who aren’t too fond of her presence. In the dark of night she’s interrupted by sounds outside of the schoolhouse. Before she can return the schoolhouse is set ablaze and Christy and David try to put out the fire. Their lives are at risk trying to reclaim the work, time and effort put into the cove. Buildings can burn but not the wisdom and knowledge of man. The fire scene is seen in the theme of seasons one and two. It signifies the danger of their work.

4. The O’Teale’s

Christy is worried about Mountie. Little Mountie O’Teale doesn’t talk and Christy wants to know more. What’s her home like? She comes upon a shuttered shack with a delighted Mrs. O’Teale. The surroundings, the smell in the cabin, and the poverty completely overwhelm Christy. The mother doesn’t know why Mountie doesn’t talk. After her visit Christy is completely devastated and breaks down in distress. It’s the life and cold hard truths of Cutter Gap. Sometimes it’s hard to face the facts instead of ignoring them.

3. Big Dreams

Christy gave an assignment for her students. To write a short theme about what they want to do when they grow up. Each child stood in front of the class telling their desires. Some that may be considered small to the average person. Something as simple as telling someone their thoughts and not being laughed at and simply writing. Yes, writing. Something so simple that you could read as you’re reading this now. But so monumental for a mountain cove that is in dire need. It’s at that moment Christy realizes the potential for her students.

2. The Fruits of Christy

Near the end of the episode and trial after trial, the head of the mission Miss Alice, realizes Christy has what it takes. She went through a literal fire, was seen as the outcast, shoulders were turned on her and she saw a world turned upside down. These moments only makes a person stronger to help and encourage the needs of others. Christy knows it’s going to be a tough journey but worth every moment. As a great man once said it’s a delight seeing the light bulb brighten in a student’s mind as they gain knowledge and understanding.

1. The Entrance

The mountains, Christy’s narration and a journey on a train open up a whole new world. The mountain range is seen as she declares “the mountains were a source of strength and peace to me, always there to quiet my mind and satisfy my heart.” The Smoke rises from the train as a beautiful piece of music quietly enters. It’s one of the most unforgettable moments not only of the Pilot but of the entire series. It creates nostalgia at its finest. It’s crafted perfectly and can be seen as a dedication to the life of Leonora Wood, the real life Christy and the people that she served.
